Painter
I grew up in New York City where I was so steeped in culture that I found it challenging to find my own voice. Seeking an environment in which to bloom, I headed to the country, the beach, and the desert. Soon after arriving in the San Francisco Bay Area, I began formal art training at California College of Arts and Crafts (now CCA) in Oakland. Since childhood, I had always dabbled at art and dreamed about becoming an artist. I earned my BFA degree with Distinction in Painting. Ever since, I have been producing, showing, and selling artwork. Oakland is now my home base. Life experience includes work in publishing, the trades, and administration for non-profits and the private sector.
I believe that Art is a powerful healing tool that enriches and even saves lives as it taps into an unconscious, pure source within us. That is my experience when I draw and paint. Also, I think that personal transformation can occur when an artist and a viewer connect. As I paint, I thoroughly enjoy creating an interplay between abstraction and representation. I work in three mediums: oil, watercolor, and chalk pastel; with brushes and with palette knives. I consider the sharing of my art experience with others a privilege and a joy.
Each time I approach a blank canvas or paper, I feel awed and excited. As I pause, breathe, and suspend three-dimensional reality, I make a leap of faith and convert inspiration into expression through color, texture, and shape. The process engages and renews me like nothing else. Rather than starting with a concept, I organically discover in the art-making process what piqued my interest to particular subject matter and what is going on inside of me. Every resulting image is a reminder that I was present with myself.
